SAMMY QUILT

Sindh, is an idyllic and peaceful town in Pakistan. The traditional handcraft, handed down from ancient times by nomads who inhabit this dessert, is known as "Sammy Quilt". The Quilts are hand stitched by the nomadic women, by putting together the pieces of vintage fabric scraps and old clothing. Each Quilt is made one by one, single-handedly by a woman that makes each Quilt a unique piece.
Today, due to the aging of the population of the highly skilled women, the Quilts are becoming rare items. Among the oldest pieces there are ones that are so called "Vintage of the Vintage", and it is difficult even for the most experienced craftsman to re-produce such pieces.
Making the Quilts is as an important work for the women as their other duties, such as housework and raising children. The pieces they make are as beautiful as sophisticated abstract art, which give lively colors to the beige of the dry dessert. The art of making " Sammy Quilt", handed down to them from generation to generation, is their heritage, their pride and their love.
---------------------------中東パキスタンの素朴で平和な町、Sindh(シンド)。 サミーキルトは、その砂漠に暮らす遊牧民族によって古来より受け継がれてきた生活用品であり、伝統工芸品です。
全てのキルトは古い服地やはぎれなどを使い、遊牧民族の女性たちによってひと針ひと針丹念に、繊細かつ精密なハンドステッチで仕上げられます。1枚のキルトは、その最後のひと針までを1人の女性職人の手によって縫い上げられ、さまざまな種類の布と刺繍に各々のセンスと技が反映され、この世にふたつとない個性的なキルトが誕生します。
近年､手の込んだキルトを作ることのできる女性たちの高齢化が進み、キルトはとても希少価値の高いものとなりました。 古いものの中には「ヴィンテージの中のヴィンテージ」と謳われ大切にされてきたものもあり、例えば自然をモチーフにしたオールハンドステッチワークのキルトなどは、手間や伝承の問題から、手練の職人でさえ、今ではほとんど再現できなくなっているといわれます。
毎日毎日、女性たちが家事や育児と同じ大切な日々の仕事として縫うキルト。それは、洗練されたアブストラクトアートのような美しさを放ち、渇いた砂漠のベージュの中に鮮やかな彩りを添えます。世代から世代へと大切に受け継がれるサミーキルトは、彼らの文化と伝統、誇り、そして愛そのものなのです。
